Before DJ Khaled’s Snapchat phenomena, he was known for screaming “We The Best” on quite a few songs that we’d bob our heads to. Not paying much attention to it, we laughed and joked on this “annoyance” and never thought of it as more than just that. Amid his Snapchat overload of him watering and speaking life into his garden, social media took to his daily rituals. They found humor and entertainment in his expression of love for nature, a quality that may be foreign to most. Finally, his welcome into fatherhood drew attention to not only his daily rituals with nature and life, but his love for his son. Pure love and infatuation, again, led to “shits and giggles” from the public. While many found another reason to laugh, I found a genuine and wise soul with so much more to give. Here are seven things we can learn from DJ Khaled:
Can you imagine growing up with a father who only spoke life and prosperity over you? A father that literally told you “I love you” countless times each day? The amount of confidence gained by having affirmations spoken over your life is immeasurable. To hear positivity is a psychological motivator that makes you want whatever is spoken over you. What happens if you don’t have a DJ Khaled in your life? BE YOUR OWN DJ KHALED! Speak, write, think and live your affirmations. Be what you want to be by speaking these things into existence and by thinking that they’ve already come to fruition. Everything that you need is already inside of you waiting for that extra push to finally come out. Affirm it to be true, even if that means screaming “WE THE BEST” until you fully believe it!
Rumor has it that Birdman undercut DJ Khaled and still owes him millions of dollars. However, when asked about the situation, Khaled responds in a positive and loving manner. In an interview, Khaled said, “It doesn’t matter what happens to the opportunity, it’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity and I’m grateful for that.” Resilience. Be resilient. There’s so much freedom in bouncing back from a situation that could’ve, should’ve and would’ve broken you if it had its way. People will not always have your best interest at heart. They may get greedy or even cheat you out of your gifts and talents. One thing’s for sure, two things are for certain: There is no situation that you can’t bounce back from. You accept it as an opportunity, identify lessons learned, and free yourself from any ill feelings that could be harbored. A come up always feels better than a let down anyway!
So, this one is interesting. I’ve heard him say this in a few interviews and it finally dawned on me what he meant. BE FREE OF TAINTING. Be authentically you without the infectious menace of this world that we are living in. It is so easy to become a big blob of negativity because of TV, social media, and even our daily relationships. Work hard to stay pure in your thoughts, desires, words, actions, and contributions in the lives of others. Become a minimalist. Start meditating. Clean out your closet. Draw. Color. Find a stress reliever and leave it all there. You are so beautiful. Don’t let this world dim your light.
DJ Khaled is a walking, talking branding machine. From being extremely annoying on songs to excessive comments under Ashad’s pictures, there is no denying that there is a method to his madness. I don’t even think he was taught these things. I’m almost certain this is just who he is, but nevertheless, its genius. There are so many things we can attach to DJ Khaled like “We The Best,” “Major Key,” or even watering your plants in spite of having a sprinkler system. Make people feel you. Make them pay attention. Work hard to plant seeds that will manifest and resonate with people, intentionally. Do it and do it with a purpose and end goal in mind. Be proprietary!
In his mind, and even in his vernacular, DJ Khaled regularly says "I'm an icon!" Well, what is an icon? In layman’s terms, an icon is a symbol representative of something. So, when DJ Khaled calls himself an “icon”, what is he a representation of? To me, he's a representation of positive energy exerted to manifest all things divinely ordained for his life. As a human race, we tend to live life in a goal-oriented manor. We set milestones and work towards them, which is all great. AMAZING! However, how many of us pray or meditate for guidance when building these goals to see if this aligns with what the universe has set up in the will for our lives? We set goals for what we want for ourselves without seeking counsel for what's been already assigned to us. Khaled's prayer life contributes to him being iconic. Understanding what was designed especially for him steers him to be successful. These things don't just fall out of the sky for him. He puts in the work of seeking direction, which in turn, leads him to the necessary resources that result in being successful. That's iconic! Being a representation of all things good and in order is what makes DJ Khaled an icon. Have you figured out what you want to be an icon for? Whether it's a representation of healthy hair, quality graphic design or even just positive energy, identify what you want to be known for. Here's a tip: choose three adjectives that you would like people to describe you as in your absence and begin to live them out. If you want to be known as being nice, go the extra mile to be nice. It may make you uncomfortable, but at some point, it will become so natural that it eventually becomes who you are. What makes you iconic?
Be in constant prayer.
In an interview, Khaled spoke on his prayer life. With an Islamic background, it's not unusual for him to pray everyday; however, he talked about praying every second of every day. Of course, that's not literal, but we often forget the small prayers or prayers during the good times. Prayer does not consist only of asking and taking, but also praising, worshipping and giving. The more you're connected to God (the source, the universe, energy), the easier it is to maneuver through life. A deeper connection helps with understanding what has been ordained for your life and staying on that path, not steering from it, and knowing exactly how to get there. Will there be bumps and detours? OF COURSE! But, considering you decide to increase your prayer life or meditation, the days of worrying, fretting and stressing will become limited. Fall in love with yourself & the almighty power, then just watch what happens.
Be your own biggest fan.
That's it! The MAJOR key! All of these things in one, PLUS rooting for yourself when no one else will, keeps you from wallowing over those who won't. If you celebrate yourself and your successes, even the small ones, no one can deter you from where you need to be. One of our biggest mistakes is seeking approval from others on what's directly ordained for us. No one can tell you what's best for you but you! Seek counsel, not approval! WE THE BEST!
