I would like to start off this post by posing a VERY important question: Has Michael Vick lost his whole ass mind? If this question has you confused, you might have missed where Michael Vick sat with Jason Whitlock (*insert eye roll here*) on FS1’s Speak For Yourself, and made very questionable comments regarding Colin Kaepernick’s unemployment in the NFL. He basically said that if Colin wants to play in the league, then he’ll need to cut his hair and clean up his look. What I took from the comments was “play into the mainstream standard of respectability if you want to be accepted and then you can keep your job.” That’s the same mentality that has kept us so far behind in this country. Don’t be who you really are. Mask your culture, thoughts, and natural self, so that you can make others comfortable. That leads me back to the aforementioned question. Obviously, Michael Vick has lost his WHOLE ass mind.
Michael Vick was sentenced to 3 years in prison for dog fighting. This happened at the height of his career. Not only did he lose his position in the NFL, but he lost his freedom and his name was pissed on by many Americans. A lot of those same Americans were the same, particularly white Americans, who have consistently spewed hate at Kaepernick for not standing for the national anthem and standing up for what is right in regards to police brutality and the treatment of black Americans in this country. They called him a thug, a horrible person, an animal abuser and ghetto trash. Yet, Vick has managed to come out on the other side of that experience and salvage some sort of normalcy as it relates to his career and football.
The part that is baffling to me is this: How can someone come out of that sort of experience and urge a fellow, black NFL player to “clean up” his look? Given all the things that Colin has sacrificed, in regards to raising awareness and fighting for the rights of all black Americans, doesn’t that just sound stupid? The fuck you mean, Vick? For one, the things that Michael Vick had to do in order to be accepted back into the sports world, and society in general, is a direct result of the decisions he made and the legal ramifications that resulted from those decisions. Let’s be clear, Colin Kaepernick is not having a hard time getting picked up by a team simply because he has an afro. He is not being picked up because everything he is doing goes against respectability politics and the mainstream idea that mainstream (white) culture is good, while respect for other cultures in this country is bad. That is bullshit and we all know it. Those are the same ideas that have kept us from wearing our natural hair in corporate America. Those are the same ideas that kept us from rocking dreads and being professionals in certain areas of business. Those same ideas made us feel bad about our full lips and hips, but then turned around and adopted our culture as the “new norm” for their own. I’m sick of it, yall. It’s one thing for those who aren’t a part of certain cultures to suggest such things. They don’t understand the picture from where we are sitting, but for one of our own to suggest something this stupid is ridiculous on so many levels.
As expected, Vick has apologized for his comments and regrets even uttering the words. Too late! The damage is done and now you’ll be getting the side eye for years to come. Stop telling marginalized groups to throw away their culture and fit into European influenced mainstream culture. It’s a new day baby and in the words of our sis Sweet Brown, “Ain’t nobody got time for that.”
Until next time, stay woke and protect your magic….
